What will I need to start skateboarding?

First you'll need a skateboard that will fit you. Second you'll want to get a pair of skateboard shoes. You can skateboard in regular shoes, but they won't last as long, they can be harder to skate in and in fact be more dangerous. Skate shoes are built with a large flat bottom, to better grip the board, and they are reinforced in areas where you'll likely wear the shoe down from grip tape. Next you'll want to get a helmet. Most skate parks require helmets and it is a smart idea to wear one. Protective pads aren't bad either if your just learning but you don't want to become dependent on them. Elbow pads are good if your practicing new tricks in your drive way and knee pads are good for vert skating.

What does a complete skateboard cost?

That all depends on the skater and what they like. Roughly you can get a complete skateboard anywhere from $120-$190.

What are the basic components of a skateboard?

Deck

- The actual board. The flat, long, oval/rectangular, usually wood part of the skateboard that you stand on. Skateboard decks are classically made from 7 plys of wood, usually maple, laminated together.

Grip Tape

- Grip tape is the gritty, sand papery layer that's applied to the top of a skateboard deck, so that your shoes can grip the board.

Trucks

- Trucks act like the the axle of a car, but for a skateboard. Trucks are the metal T-shaped part that mounts onto the underside of the skateboard deck, that the wheels will be attached to. A regular skateboard will have two trucks, each facing each other.

Wheels

- Self explanatory.

Hardware

- The bolts and nuts that are used to connect the trucks to the deck.

Bearings

- Bearings sit inside the wheel hubs and determine the smoothness of the ride of your board.
